Conductors/Switchman
The conductor/switchman position will control and coordinate the train movements while switching railcars whether in the yard of a railroad, industrial plant, or similar location to facilitate the unloading and loading of railcars in a safe and efficient manner to service our customers. This position is a manual labor position which requires that the individual become proficient in the following skills, duties, and requirements within a prescribed training and introductory period.
Qualifications
- High school education or general education (GED) or 3 to 6 months job-related experience; or equivalent of education and experience.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Key Responsibilities:
Reliable Attendance and Communication: Ensure timely attendance and follow written and verbal instructions. Communicate effectively in English, and understand basic math.
Operational Management: Oversee train operations, ensuring the train adheres to its schedule and coordinates smoothly with the engineer, crew, and dispatchers. Supervise and coordinate train crew activities, including switching operations, and keep the train on its assigned route.
Safety Oversight: Ensure the safety of everyone on board by checking for safety hazards, securing cargo, and addressing issues during the journey. Monitor track conditions, operate and maintain track switches, couplings, air hoses, and brakes, and set warning signals during emergency stops.
Communication and Coordination: Relay important information between the engineer, crew, dispatchers, and station personnel. Use radios, hand signals, or verbal instructions to manage switching operations and coordinate emergency responses.
Cargo Management: On freight trains, oversee the securement of cargo and manage any issues that arise.
Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed logs of train activities, including delays, mechanical issues, and safety checks. Complete necessary reports at the end of the journey, and keep records of car movements, cargo, and other relevant details.
Emergency and Maintenance Response: In emergencies, take charge by coordinating evacuation or securing the train and cargo. Make minor repairs to equipment as needed and report any major repair requirements.
