Locomotive Engineer
The locomotive engineer is primarily responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the train. This highly skilled professional operates the locomotive, ensuring that the train moves according to the schedule, speed limits, and safety regulations. The engineer must have a deep understanding of the mechanics of the locomotive, as well as the signals, tracks, and routes they are navigating.
This position is a manual labor position which requires that the individual become proficient in the following skills, duties, and requirements within a prescribed training and introductory period.
Qualifications
- High school education or general education (GED) or 3 to 6 months job-related experience; or equivalent of education and experience.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to pass training and required testing.
Key Responsibilities:
Train Operation: The engineer controls the train’s speed, brakes, and overall movement, ensuring smooth and safe operation according to signals, safety rules, and schedules. This includes switching, coupling cars, and handling emergencies.
Monitoring and Safety Compliance: Constantly monitor critical indicators like speed, air pressure, and battery voltage. Follow federal regulations, company policies, and safety protocols to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of passengers and cargo.
Communication and Coordination: Stay in constant communication with the conductor, dispatchers, and other train crews to receive instructions and report any issues. Manage switching operations and relay information effectively in English.
Locomotive Inspection: Inspect the locomotive before and after each run to identify any mechanical issues or hazards, ensuring it meets safety compliance and is in optimal working condition. Perform minor repairs as needed.
Record Keeping and Additional Duties: Maintain accurate records of car movements, cargo, and any operational issues. Perform tasks such as throwing switches, setting brakes, handling emergency signals, and assisting in switching operations as required. Ensure reliable attendance and timely task completion.
